Museum of London at Smithfield

The New Museum of London isn’t opening until 2024, so I wanted to show you what it would say if it was open today. Amongst the many elements in our renovation of this vast Victorian market complex at West Smithfield, the new museum will feature 200 metres of surfaces for large scale changeable physical -not digital- lettering, wrapping the city block that it occupies. This art canvas allows the museum to speak to London and Londoners directly. To say what it thinks- to take a position. One season it might be words of an artist, a poet, a child, a mother, another season, a novelist, a centenarian, a curator a philosopher, who knows? Words from history, words to make us dream, words to move us, words to change the way our city thinks. Words of activism and words of joy. The Victorian architecture of London used to be full of lettering – this is a lost art form which we will be returning to the city in a unique and open way. What words would you write to London? This week the new @museumoflondon scheme by us (@asifkhan.now , @stanton_williams and #julianharraparchitects ) has been granted planning approval for the entire £337m museum by the Corporation of London after 4 years of hard work and dedication by the museum, the Corporation, and by our teams alongside @akt_ii @arupgroup and the support of @mayorofldn, and many brilliant specialists, so finally we know that scenes like this will be built in 4 years from now. So from today the images we create are showing a real place. And to mark that, today the museum is adorned with a statement – a movement – which needs the support of citizens, cities and cultural institutions around the world. See u in the future.
